Teh Daily Shows [Oct. 11th, 2013|07:53 pm]
I still watch the Daily Show, well, daily, albeit about 16 hours after those of you in the US watching it live (acquired by...nefarious means since it doesn't show on TV over here any more than Americans get Have I Got News For You). I have to say I've been enjoying it this week - I love when Jon Stewart gets legitimately pissed off, drops some of the jokeiness and really lays in.

It is a bit of a reminder of how alien American politics can be, though. Not that the UK's is a Utopian bed of roses by any means but we don't literally have half the government shut down and not going to work thanks to a small bunch of literal nutcases. This is crazy shit.

Oh dear [Aug. 14th, 2013|09:07 am]
My letting agent just called; my landlady wants to sell the house I'm living in so they wanted permission to have people come in for viewings. Guess I'm going to have to find somewhere else to live? I've got at least two months' notice and I'm not convinced she's going to find a buyer (tiny house, no garden, no parking), but still, I may have to find somewhere else to live soon, which is a bit annoying.

Happy independence day Leftpondians! [Jul. 4th, 2013|08:19 pm]
In a nod to the many years I spent in the US, I had another go at making corndogs just as I did last year, plus fried chicken and coleslaw. Corndogs turned out much better this time around; not quite State Fair but in the ballpark (pun not intended). I wish I could teleport some to minnesattva :) Hope you're all having fun over there.

(no subject) [Jun. 28th, 2013|05:37 pm]
I've been wondering why Fang seemed off his food all week. Turns out I'd accidentally gotten him kitten gooshyfood and he's been throwing a 'rawr I am a Big Cat and not a child stop treating me like one!' teenage tantrum over it. ;)

Odd thoughts [Jun. 27th, 2013|07:47 pm]
There's a type of rain peculiar to the UK whereby you just know it's going to last all day. It's desultory but persistent; you hear it drumming on the roof and know that there's no escape, it's going to be there until you fall asleep, you have no chance to survive make your time.

Oddly, I've missed it.

Cripes, I've been on LJ over a decade [May. 12th, 2013|09:24 pm]
And reading entries from a decade ago is a very odd feeling ;p

Spring is here! [Apr. 22nd, 2013|06:56 pm]
More or less anyway. Nice warm days, no need for a coat, chirping birds in the trees.

Random life updateCollapse )

I appear to have ordered a new phone [Mar. 29th, 2013|10:11 am]
The touchscreen on my T-Mobile G2 is dying (it doesn't work unless I push the keyboard into just the right position), so I've finally knuckled down and bought a new phone (a Galaxy Note II). It's weird how I've gotten attached to the G2 given I used to completely hate phones, and in a way it's one of the last links to my life in America. I'm going to miss using it (and definitely going to miss the hardware keyboard).

Not that I'll throw the old one away; I can find uses for a miniature wifi-enabled computer with a video camera and 3G connectivity that don't involve using it as a phone.

An anniversary [Mar. 11th, 2013|08:10 pm]
Today is Thankstaking, or antiThanksgiving, or something; the anniversary of my long voyage from the New Country back to the wild, unexplored shores of Britain.

Work continues fine; a bit busy and deadline-y at the moment, but still doing fine. I love living in Abingdon, it's a charming little place; I'm still playing D&D every Wednesday and finding a social circle through that, and Oxford Geek Night is in a few weeks too.

I'm also playing around with writing my own LISP-like language. Surprisingly fun (and I begin to see why some LISP people rave about it, even if it still looks weird as heck to my eyes).

Not much else to say, really. Odd to think how far I've come in a couple of years.

Huh [Oct. 23rd, 2012|05:54 pm]
My new job's office is about a hundred yards from my first ever fulltime job's office.

Talk about coming full circle. :)
